Napoleonic Wargames on a Sunday

Here are some photos of the games we played today. The first was a big 28mm Napoleonic bash in which a horde of Brunswickers took on an equally numerous mass of French. The other game was a very nice 6mm game fighting Aspern-Essling.

Sunday's Wargames

Here are some photos of the games we played yesterday (Sunday). The first set of photos are of a 28mm Hail Caesar game with a Roman force being ambushed by a horde of Hairy foes.

 The Hairy ones rush forward to destroy their Roman enemies.

 The Romans remain calm, resolved to crush the barbarian scum.

 Battle is joined. Orange dice are casualty markers.

 From behind the Roman lines, their left is under attack 

while to the front masses of Hairy foes gather.

 Valiant tribesmen cross a stream which ran across the table.

The Roman left wing collapses under relentless pressure, 

but they make their opponents pay a high price.

 

The game now becomes one of how much of his force can the Roman commander extract from the debacle. In the image above a horde of warriors engulfs a Roman cohort which fights to the last man, covering the retreat of its comrades. In the end two Auxiliary cohorts and a Legionary cohort escaped. In all the Romans lost about 2/3rds of their original force, not too bad considering the circumstances they found themselves in.

54mm Romans vs. Enemies

I have finally painted enough 54mm enemies of Rome to at least allow a good photo opportunity. So here are the lads lined up. This is about half the 54mm Romans I have and about three quarters of the enemies of Rome. The painting of the enemies continues in the hope that one day I will have a vertiable horde of them to throw at the Legion.

28mm Achaemenid Persian Heavy Cavalry

Hi All,
The first unit of heavy cavalry for my revamped Ancient Persian army.
I normally don't make cavalry units this large but they just seem to befit this type of army.

They are from Foundry but I think they have been rebadged as Casting Room Miniatures for their eBay site. They are larger than the older, Perry designed range but they still look pretty good and larger is acceptable for heavy cavalry.

Like a lot of heavy cavalry in history, they are presumed to be made up of the 'rich kids' who can afford such things as quality horses and fancy armour so I've tried to paint them to look like they are mix of flashiness and menace.

Spears are plastic from one of those Greek hoplite kits that are easily available. They look good but I snapped 2 just while painting them and another 1 when they had their first game on the weekend. Oh well..
