DEFEND THE GAP GAME

Here are some photos of the defend the gap game we played today. The game was 15 heroes defending a gap in the Great Wall against 100 Orcs. We played two games - each game had a time limit of 90 minutes. The first game was a marginal Orc victory with them forcing the heroes back from the gap with their line broken into small groups - not destroyed and still dangerous but no longer in control of the gap. The second was really a draw in which the heroes despite losing two dead and every man except two being wounded managed to remain in something like a line and still contested the gap while the Orcs gathered their strength for another surge forward. Another turn may well have seen the Orcs break through. The Orcs were very unlucky in this second game as they could have killed quite a few of the wounded heroes but just could never roll the dice to do it when they had the chance. In both games the Orcs could try to climb the wall but the odds were that they would either fail or break their necks falling if they did so. About half a dozen Orcs managed to get up onto the walls, but they were either dealt with or contained by the heroes. The rules we used are home grown and work well. It worked well and everyone who played said it was fun.

The brave Heroes await the Orc Horde
 Orcs rush towards the Heroes
The Orcs crash into the Heroes line and a great battle begins - Orcs get up onto the wall
The Evil Wizard encourages his minions on
 Fighting for the gap
The Heroes are being slowly pushed back from the Gap - the yellow tags indicate that the Hero is wounded - one more wound and the Hero is killed. Despite trying as hard as they could the Orc players could never manage to roll the right dice to kill the wounded heroes whenever they got the chance to do so.

REGIMENTAL FIRE AND FURY GAME

Ian, Chris and I played a game of Regimental Fire and Fury this week. We used my 28mm ACW minis. The main reason for the game was to get my newly painted Yankee cavalry into action. The game was a meeting engagement between a Union force and Confederate force moving in from opposite corners of the table. The objective was to control a small hamlet at a crossroads further down the table. Chris played Union infantry and guns and Ian played Confederate. I played the Union cavalry.

One Brigade of Chris's Yankee infantry with guns following march onto the table. Yankee cavalry ride on in the background.

A Brigade of Ian's Johnny Rebs march on to the table - the race is on!

This lets you see what was going on. The two columns of opposing infantry are closing in on the hamlet cross roads. The cavalry is working its way around the flank with the intention of getting on the flank or behind the Reb line.

The two forces converge on the hamlet.
The cavalry make their way across the table with a degree of panache and decorum unknown to the grubby infantry.

Dismounted, the Cavalry form up behind a fence.

The battle develops into a contest between the infantry of both sides. In the distance the Rebs attempt to outflank the union left flank. In the foreground the Rebs refuse their own left flank because of the Union cavalry lurking out on that flank.

Over on the Union left flank the battle becomes close and personal. It could have gone either way on this part of the battlefield but lack of time available for the game meant that there no decisive outcome could be achieved.

GAME OF THRONES WILDLINGS

These are two Game of Thrones Wilding figures from Dark Sword Miniatures. I have just finished painting them and will use them as Vikings. Very nice, exceptionally well detailed and proportioned minis.
