28mm Napoleonics - 1 page rules Test Game

Hello All,

After the AWI games with the Fife & Drum rules I made a few adjustments and managed to convert them into a 1 page Napoleonic set. Richard and I played a basic scenario on Saturday to test them out. Richard used his Westphalians (in his own words "Nobody's favourite army"), while I used my Bavarians that I had just rebased but not fully completed. A reinforced division per side. Fast, fun and easy to play.

The game was successful and went smoothly. We are both fairly laid back and we made about 3 changes as we played without getting worked up about it. Regarding the scenario, the Westphalians had to attack and capture both hamlets and control the high ground. In the end I had my arse handed to me. I made a few mistakes and couldn't hit a barn door so the Westphalians won completely. Not a sentence I ever thought I would write.

Richard says the skirmish rules took a bit of getting used to. The skirmishers work as 'shields' against musketry. They absorb/negate a hit for each skirmishing pair of figures. So if a battalion has 2 skirmish pairs and they take 3 hits, then it becomes 1 hit on the parent unit. Likewise, they also add a firing die each and need a 1-2 to 'hit'. I think they worked really well as they were useful without being overpowering and having skirmisher superiority is a distinct advantage.

Anyway, on to the pics.

Cheers,
Mick

More Norman Invasions

Inspired by TigerZouaves excellent Viking figures, I have persevered in painting my mountain of Norman figures sitting around.  It's been a labour of love.  But Im pleased with the result.  I'll keep adding to them as I go along- but I think its time to paint a few different things for a bit.  It's good to have more space in the unpainted figure cupboard too.  They are based very close-  4 infantry to a 60mm x 20mm base. I think it gives a good effect.  Maybe the cavalry rode in looser formations- I don't know. The photos don't really do them justice though.  They weigh a ton!  One day these guys might even see battle!

Norman Shieldwall. Believe it or not- there are over 200 figures here!

Immortal Greeks

Below is a picture of my efforts of painting the plastic kit produced by Immortal.  They are well proportioned and there is plenty of parts to create variations.  These gents are meant to depict the period of the Persian Wars.  The water slide transfers are very nicely done.  You need to cut close to the image though to ensure that there are no bubbles or creases from the curve of the shield.  They should blend in OK with the Foundry and Ral Partha figures I have already, although their shields are slightly larger.  The box contains an excellent pamphlet explaining the weapons and armour of the different periods of Ancient Greece.  The only figure I didn't use was the piper, although a wonderful figure was just a bit small and looked too adult for my liking.  Overall, they were great fun to paint and look even better in formation.

Bill and Barney Lead the Baggage Train

Every good army needs a baggage train.  Here is part of a project I have been working on.  The two figures have been in my collection waiting for a paint for almost two decades!
Bill The Pony
Bill the pony is the same one that followed the fellowship of the Lord of the Rings.  He is good friends with Sam and Tom Bombadil  and on occasion will carry baggage for the odd Pike and Shotte army!  He is a two piece casting and comes from the original Citadel miniatures range for the Lord of the Rings way back in 1885/6 when Citadel held the licence.  I'm surprised that I have kept him unpainted for so long!  Upon investigation on the Stuff of Legends site, I found that I have collected most of the figures in the seres and still have them! Here is a link to the  fellowship of the ring boxed set from which Bill came from.

'Barney' the Donkey and cart do not keep the same illustrious company as Bill.  They are about 21 years old. Originally, the cart came with a coachman with some outlandish blunderbuss, whom I still have tucked away in a box somewhere.  It is a great looking cart that can fit many periods.  Barney and the coachman (picture at the bottom of page)

As an aside, here is a stand from immortal's plastic Greeks set.  They are a lovely kit and a challenge to paint.  The waterslide transfers are very good.
