Sunday Wargames

We had our monthly wargames club meeting today - Sunday. 20 people turned up and played a variety of games. Here are some photos.

A Dark ages battle from our ongoing campaign.
An interesting DBA-3 series of games based on a 1066 campaign

One of the DBA-3 games being played.
An X Wings game.
Spaceships and more spaceships for X Wings - lovely models.

Trying to get the most out of your Dark Ages warriors

This fellow - who was Lord Robert a character in our campaign - was surrounded by his foes for several turns, but try as they might they could not kill Robert. In the end Robert threw off all his assailants and emerged victorious.

Robert surrounded by the foes he had slain - something for the bards to sing about.
A very impressive Hail Caesar game - Seleucid vs. Roman.

HAIL CAESAR GAME - TEUTOBURGER WALD 9AD

Here is a Hail Caesar game we played today - based on Teutoburger Wald 9AD. The Romans marching blissfully through the forest, listening to the birds twitter and admiring the beauties of nature.
Suddenly smelly unwashed hairy people appear from the forest - who can they be, what do they want?

Without even a pretense at good manners the ugly brutes rush forward and demand the Legionaries pay them undivided attention - they really were crude fellows, no manners at all.
Despite every effort to be polite to them the hairy oafs kept badgering the Legionaries.
In the end enough was enough and severe words had to be spoken to the brutes, why would not they display some good manners and stop making so much noise!

Even so the smelly buffoons just would not go away - it was becoming both tedious and annoying. One group of louts kept insisting that their whining complaints be listened to - on and on they went badgering without a pause.
But in the end it all got too much and even the most polite Legionary could stand it no longer - so out flew the pilums and in went the gladius.
Despite the greatest encouragement to desist and depart the uncivilized boors would not take the hint and had to be killed ... such a tedious exercise.
Still hooting and hollering, the noisy mob were driven away finally clearing the road and enabling the Legion's nature walk to continue.

Persians

Here's a base of Persians I painted recently.  They are made by Immortal miniatures (now owned by Warlord).  They have been sitting at the bottom of a box for a while now- I have about 20 in all.  I have finally dragged them out to paint.  I've no grand plans for a Persian horde.  It's just fun to paint something different!

The Boy General - "Puppy"

I've been after a general for my Romans for some time now.  A hunt through my unpainted figure box revealed just the thing!  The Boy General.  Called Catulus by the troops- meaning "Puppy".  Elevated to leadership through privilege and not experience- the pup has yet to prove his detractors in the field of battle.
I'm not sure what make the figure is or where it even came from, but he would certainly need help reaching the saddle!

More Norman Invasions

Inspired by TigerZouaves excellent Viking figures, I have persevered in painting my mountain of Norman figures sitting around.  It's been a labour of love.  But Im pleased with the result.  I'll keep adding to them as I go along- but I think its time to paint a few different things for a bit.  It's good to have more space in the unpainted figure cupboard too.  They are based very close-  4 infantry to a 60mm x 20mm base. I think it gives a good effect.  Maybe the cavalry rode in looser formations- I don't know. The photos don't really do them justice though.  They weigh a ton!  One day these guys might even see battle!

Norman Shieldwall. Believe it or not- there are over 200 figures here!
A few archers
Norman Cavalry- 70+ figures

Odds and Sods

Here are some bits and pieces from the painting table of late.  I have been painting a few figures just for the fun of it!

Some Crusader Miniatures Nubians- All crusader figures seem to paint up so well and easily too! When TigerZouave visits next these guys can join his collection!

Here are some odd Warlord Roman I put together to form a command base of sorts

I bought this guy from ebay- missing an arm.  The arm and lance were from my bits box.  I'm not sure if the Romans Auxiliary Came corps  used lances like this- Maybe this guy was an innovator?

Some Black Tree Athenians.  I have been painting quite a few Greeks lately.  I must take a pic of them en-masse

More Romans and a few hairy Celts!

I have been a bit quiet of late, but that is because I have been slowly going mad painting Roman Red!
I am close to finishing an army.  In addition to the Warlord figures I displayed in an earlier post, I have added some more Black Tree figures.  I really like the Black Tree Ballista figures and their western Roman Archers.  I am working on an Auxiliary Cavalry unit and then they should pretty much be done.  All infantry are based on 40x40mm bases.  This was not for any particular ruleset, but to offer the greatest flexibility when playing.  Also below is another diversion!  War and Peace games had a ridiculous sale on the Warlord Celts plastic set, which I could not resist.  These figures are great fun to assemble and paint.  There is plenty of scope to individualize them and a real dynamic feel to the poses.  I don't intend on building and army of Celts, but as a contrast to the regimented Romans they were a fun project.
32 Hairy Brutes looking for a fight!

2 Black Tree Scorpions and a larger ballista - sorry about the dodgy photo

The boys with the eagle must be in charge!

48 Black Tree Romans.

The Little Big Men shield transfers really come up well.

Centurion 'bung-eyes' leads them into battle

Black Tree Western Archers.  These are really nice miniatures to paint.

Some very old Citadel Roman Eastern Archers- courtesy of tigerzouave!

Wargames Factory plastic Roman cavalry.  These guys are hard work to paint.  The detail is not great at all and really needed work to get them to this stage.  I have some Warlord Metal Command figures to add to them to hopefully make the unit look better.

The General!
