1898 US and Spanish Warships

I have finished the water effects on the bases of the 1:1000 scale 1898 ships I have put together in the last couple of weeks. I have all the ships for the Battle of Santiago Bay. These are the ones that I have completed at the moment. Now all I have to do is finish the other ten or so ships I have. In the pictures are the battlecruiser USS Brooklyn, the older battleship USS Texas, the battleship USS Indiana, the Spanish cruiser SNS Infanta Maria Teresa and the Spanish torpedo boat destroyers SNS Pluton and SNS Furor.

  1. Cool! I have many Houston's Ships including both fleets at Santiago. Great models and I like your basing. How did you accomplish the water effects?

  2. For the water effects mounted the ships on clear perspex bases, painted the underside of the bases with a sea color - used Vallejo deep sea color but it ran out and now I can't seem to find it anymore so used a Tamiya dark blue as an alternative. Then I used Woodland Scenic water effects applying it to the topside of the perspex base with a toothpick as the tool, waited for it to cure, which can take 24 hours and then painted on the bow waves and wake with white paint.

  4. I wish I had the Santiago ships, but bought only the Lissa boxed set (all I could find). I haven't painted them yet; I may try your technique on the water, but my skills in that area leave something to be desired.

  6. I just purchased the Cristobal Colon and two more Spanish Torpedo Boat Destroyers from Houston ships and they were delivered quickly without any trouble at all. Great Endeavours - see Jonathan's post above - has the full range of Houston ships.
